Radioisotope Manufacturing Facility Decontamination and Decommissioning – South Plainfield, NJ

Ameriphysics personnel characterized, removed, and disposed of two cyclotrons and ancillary support equipment and then demolished, removed, and disposed two cyclotron vaults, four target vaults, four hot cells, and three fume hoods. The cyclotrons involved were a Cyclotron Corporation CS-22 and an IBA Cyclone 30. The latter machine weighed 50 tons, and its decommissioning involved the removal and disposal of more than 12 million pounds of neutron-activated concrete bioshielding. Ameriphysics decommissioned the facility’s remaining 34,000 square feet of laboratory space, and at the completion of the project, conducted MARSSIM final status surveys that demonstrated that the space was acceptable for unrestricted use.
