Decommissioning is the process of removing a nuclear facility from service and reducing residual radioactivity to a level that allows a site or facility to be released with no further regulatory controls. The goal of a D&D project may be to terminate the site’s radioactive materials license or simply to meet certain site- or stakeholder-specific needs.
Ameriphysics understands the decommissioning process and is uniquely qualified to assist you with the following or related D&D services:
- Decommissioning planning and cost estimating
- Historical site assessments, scoping surveys, remedial action control surveys, and final status surveys according to MARSSIM
- Sampling and analysis of structures, surface and subsurface soil, and surface water and groundwater
- Decontamination, remediation, demolition, and excavation
- Derivation of cleanup criteria using the RESRAD, DandD, and PRG codes
- Equipment disassembly and dismantlement
- Radioactive waste characterization and disposal
- Data verification and validation
- Restoration and long-term monitoring
- Independent reviews and audits
- Hazard assessment and hazardous material abatement
- Training on most of the above
We have performed these and related services for universities, research facilities, government agencies, byproduct material licensees, cyclotron operators, source material licensees, production and utilization facilities, radioactive waste processing and disposal sites, research reactors, and storage facilities. Our customers have included literally every type of government or commercial entity with a radiological concern. Please visit our Projects page to view examples of our past D&D successes.
