Radiological Decommissioning of a University Proton Therapy Center Cyclotron Facility – Bloomington, IN

The facility operated two cyclotrons, a 15 MeV injector and a 208 MeV main stage. The latter machine weighed approximately 5 million pounds. Ameriphysics decommissioned the entire facility, including disassembly and removal of the two cyclotrons, three proton therapy treatment rooms, two proton materials testing target rooms, and associated beam lines and dumps. The facility possessed three other cyclotrons of unidentified origin that were not in use but were also removed and disposed. The project was performed under Ameriphysics’ radioactive material license. In total, more than 300 tractor-trailer shipments of radioactive waste were made. Ameriphysics developed and performed MARSSIM-based final status surveys, successfully returning the impacted 12,500 square feet of area to unrestricted use.
