Excavation, Consolidation, and Disposal of Previously Uncontrolled Mine Waste Under CERCLA – Baxter Springs, KS

The project was conducted for EPA Region 7 and consisted of excavation, consolidation, and disposal of mine waste and associated soils. More than 1 million cubic yards of contaminated material and soil were excavated, transported, and disposed. Wastes were generally consolidated in predetermined areas, except that some of the waste was used to seal open mine shafts, vent pipes, subsidence pits, and wells. The remedy also included capping the disposed waste piles, grading the piles, re-vegetating exposed soils, and creating basins for proper water management and erosion control.
