Decontamination and Decommissioning of a University Cyclotron and Radioisotope Production Facility – Buffalo, NY

Ameriphysics provided engineering, design, and project management services that allowed the University to decommission and demolish its 18,000 square foot radionuclide production facility. The University used an unshielded, 50-ton Cyclone 30 cyclotron for such purposes, and as a result, characterization, removal, and disposal of the cyclotron, its ancillaries, a beamline and target vault, and a considerable amount of activated concrete bioshielding were necessary. All decontamination and demolition work was performed under reciprocity of the Ameriphysics radioactive materials license, according to plans developed by Ameriphysics, and under the direct oversight of Ameriphysics’ personnel.
